Anakreon in stone? An ancient poetic inscription from Teos

In the ancient city of Teos in what is today western Türkiye, a unique epigraph was discovered: an angry, vituperative poem that raises questions about authorship and literary tradition.

Was it the famous poet Anakreon who penned these crude verses in the sixth century before the Christian era?

Professor Christian Marek (University of Zurich, UZH), one of the people who deciphered the inscription, provides an insight into this extraordinary discovery and its significance.

You can read more about the poem in the interview with Professor John Weisweiler, Chair for Roman and Late-Antique History at LMU.

There will be a reception after the event. A registration in advance is required for this. For more information, please visit the website of the Department of History.
